A gunman on the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas Strip casino opened fire on an outdoor music festival, killing at least 50 people – including two off-duty police officers – and wounding more than 200, officials said early Monday.
The attack on Sunday night was the worst mass shooting in modern US history.
Country music star Jason Aldean was performing when the shots began ringing out at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.
Officers confronted the suspect on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino across the street from the concert, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said.
Attacker identified
Police identified the gunman as area resident Stephen Paddock, 64, and said they had no information yet about his motive.
He was not believed to be connected to any militant group,  Lombardo said.
"We have no idea what his belief system was," Lombardo added.
"We've located numerous firearms within the room that he occupied."
Authorities believed they had located Paddock's roommate, who they identified as Marilou Danley.
He gave no details of whether she was suspected of involvement in the attack but described her as an "associate."
Police had located two cars that belonged to the suspect.
The two slain off-duty officers were attending the concert, Lombardo said.
An on-duty officer was in critical condition and another was wounded, he added.
Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city, known primarily for its gambling, shopping and entertainment.
Police have disclosed no information that would suggest a motive for the shooting or revealed the identity of the suspect.
