Heavy rainfall hits Istanbul, causes fires and flash floods

From Hurriyet Daily News

A heavy rainfall  has been effective in Istanbul as of the evening hours of July 27 as fires and flash floods have been reported across the city.

A fire broke out in the Haydarpaşa port when a crane fell onto an oil tanker, causing explosions.

The fire was taken under control after firefighters arrived at the scene.

Transportation in the city also came to a near halt following the heavy rainfall.

Separately, the wall of a cemetery in the Kurtuluş neighborhood of the Şişli district collapsed and there were reports of wounded people in the scene. At least two people were wounded after the collapse, private broadcaster NTV reported.

Another fire also broke out in the Kağıthane district when a lightning struck a store.

Some subway stations were also flooded as air traffic was also affected by the rainfall.

Transportation on the Eurasia Tunnel was temporarily suspended due to heavy rainfall. The two-way tunnel was later opened.

Several underpasses, intersections and some metro and bus stops were closed, leaving thousands of pedestrians stranded.

The rainfall came nearly 10 days after another summer rain hit the city.
